This is a fascinating quote from Buddha on change. Let that sink in for a moment. Change isn’t painful; it’s the fight we put up against it. Wow – that seems spot on to me.
So what are we fighting against?
- Ego. Man, I hate being wrong [especially in my marriage]. If I am not on my game, I fight to win, not to understand and bond.
- Distrust. I dropped a car off today for repair at a dealership. I had to discipline my thoughts to believe they could be telling me the truth.
- Saturation. We have too many things going at once: Facebook, Instagram, Strava [my favorite], LinkedIn, Email, text, open table.
- Comfort. We get hard-wired into routines that produce safety and familiarity.
How We Get UNStuck
- Humility. Right now, whatever area of your life is dogging you, make an honest decision to become a student and take on a growth mindset.
- Trust. Let others in that have a personal example. Drop your guard. Open your Kimono.
- Discipline. Focus on one thing at a time and grind it out til you have mastered it.
- Grit. There is a new wave of people taking cold showers first thing in the morning. Why? There are training themselves to hack against the comfort center of the brain and take greater control of their actions for better decision making.
This is simple – it’s just not easy. We don’t need to complicate our approach to change and development. Put these 4 attributes into practice for one week and tell me how it goes. Email me at joel@theperformancegroup.us.
