The Truth in Comedy

Through laughter comes wisdom

I love getting way out of my comfort zone …. Occasionally.   I’ve surfed Waimea Bay, piloted a high-performance aircraft, jumped from a perfectly good airplane, and raced motorcycles. But the thing that scares me the most [and attracts me like a moth to a flame] is improvisational comedy.  The idea of being that spontaneous, exposed, and dangerously connected to a group of other people in front of a live crowd?  Holy. Moly.

Laughter is good for the soul and something we need to do more often. But what makes comedy meaningful is when it offers an important truth about life — through laughter comes wisdom.  Like the picture above from the movie Airplane:  if you are going to share your “story”, for goodness sake, make it interesting!

I remember listening to Robin Williams do a comedy piece on religion. It was brilliant, sad and cathartic all at the same time.  That’s what great artwork can do for us.   And that’s what great comedy does for us.

So, since this is a private forum – and I will hold your responses confidential – click this link to email me and share your favorite comedic scene that taught you an important truth about life.  I just may write a blog about it [and I promise to keep you anonymous!].
