Before you go All In, Dial It In

Dial it in

GO BIG OR GO HOME!  We all love the concept of going “all in”.  But when it comes to setting and achieving your goals, you gotta know who or what you’re up against.  One really cool way to help that is Benchmarking.  Benchmarking improves goal achievement by creating the right comparisons.  To read that article, click here.

When I was in the military, we would go out late at night in the FA 18 Hornet and drop laser-guided dummy bombs on targets using night vision goggles.  I know, not as cool as that laser-guided putter picture above!    But getting things dialed in at this level takes it to a whole otha level!

Want to be that accurate in goal setting?  Then dial in that goal using the S.M.A.R.T.E.R. template:

–  specific
– measurable
– achievable
– relevant
– timebound
– emotional
– reward

Using this template after benchmarking your goal is as precise as you can get. So, if we were to put all this together:

Goal: Run my 1st 10k race ahead of the national average
Benchmark:  compared to my age, gender – the average is a 56-minute race at 9:02 min / miles

Specific – 10k race completed ahead of the national average
Measurable – 54 minute race @ 8:41 pace
Achievable – can I run 3 miles a day 3 days a week now?
Relevant – if you feel plump, weak, or can’t look at yourself with your shirt off?  Yes!
Timebound – 8 to 10 weeks
Emotional  – connect positive images and emotions to the training and event itself – this is HUGE
Reward – I’m going to help someone else do their 1st run that really needs a boost in life

The last two components, Emotional and Reward, isHUGE for creating MEANINGFUL GOALS.   I’m gonna expand on that this Thursday ……

Punch line?  Using a tool like S.M.A.R.T.E.R. will really change the game in goal setting and achievement.   So, before you go “all in”, make sure you dial it in.
