Who are You Crushing On?

What do you do when you feel like you are doing all the right things, actively engaged in a process of improvement for life, yet things are just not happening?  I mentioned last time that it starts with a period of quiet reflection and asking yourself the question, “What is life teaching me?” [click link here]

My response to this question was aligning my professional ambitions with my character strengths and technical competencies in order to align better with who I am and how I am wired.

Here is the second soul searching question you need to ask yourself:
Who are you competing with or obsessing over that’s distracting you?

What most of us won’t admit
They are on Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn.  They are doing far better than you, financially, socially, philanthropically.  They look better in shorts, in heels, in the pool, and in front of the mirror in their micro mini thong negligee.  If you are a man they are better looking, tougher, more capable in a fistfight, more likely to win in Vegas.  If you are a woman, they can still come out of the ocean in their bikinis and are in no hurry to cover their body – even after raising 3 great kids and killin’ it at work.

Be Yourself. Everyone Else Is Already Taken.
What is the real tragedy behind Oscar Wilde’s quote?  When we get fixated on someone else, we can no longer create, invent, explore, and enjoy – because we are looking away from our self, our story, our power, our contribution, our significance.

Solution?  Sure, there are a lot of frauds on social media, and we know better to compare that one trip to Monaco or the Amalfi Coast with our pathetic trip to Costco and the Cineplex – but here is the silver bullet:  when you get triggered, reaffirm your commitment to cultivating what you’re all about.    And remember this:

The sun always shines, but the moon also shines in its own time.

Next Step: Take 15-30 minutes every morning to reflect on who you are competing with or obsessing over that’s distracting you, write it down, then start a conversation with someone you respect.
