Questions to ask yourself when things don’t happen or stop happening.
I’ve been beating the drum recently about calling others out of isolation and into the power of deep dive discussion. It’s one thing to vent and spill your guts, but it’s an entirely different thing – actually a privilege – to have someone who can help you get out of your own way and Release the Kraken!
What do you do when you feel like you are doing all the right things, actively engaged in a process of improvement for life, yet things are just not happening? You should start a period of quiet reflection and ask yourself this [first] question:
What is life teaching me?
Work
Are you constantly putting out fires instead of pursuing your big picture priorities? Are you and your top team struggling to set boundaries around communication tools and social media? Do you struggle nurturing a culture that is supportive while at the same time competitive and achieving your critical performance goals?
Family
Do you feel guilty about sacrificing quality time with kids, spouse or partner even though you provide a lifestyle that others envy? And when you finally get the time, do you feel dull or distracted? Do you feel like there is no time for reflection, decompression, and rejuvenation?
Friendship
Are outings with friends fun but shallow? When you try to take it deeper, does it get awkward? Have you reached the point where you need a few Jack & Cokes to manage conversations that normally swing from bragging to complaining?
What life is teaching me, now
My impressive professional ambitions have to align with my character strengths and technical competencies. If not, I am deluding myself and wasting precious time where I could be pursuing things that align better with who I am and how I am wired.
Punch line? Take 15-30 minutes every morning to reflect on what life is teaching you about an area you feel stuck, write it down, then start a conversation with someone you respect.
