My Biggest Weakness

I mentioned in part one of It’s Blowin’ Up that part of playing big is, ironically, getting rid of the part of us that keeps falsely big: the ego. Then I went on to say that ego technically isn’t the bad guy that corrupts our nature, but arrogance is.

Of course, none of us would admit we are arrogant. We’d be more likely to say it’s “confidence”. Or we might use one of the most audacious oxymorons ever crafted, “The Humble Brag.” As if telling someone else how great we are in a soft tone with eyes glancing at our feet is really going to conceal the arrogance. Ah, nope.

Why is Humility so hard?
  1. Because it’s misunderstood:  First off, humility is hard because it’s often confused with being self-deprecating or naive or allowing someone to take advantage.  That’s not humble, that is more related to cowardice or ignorance.
  2. Because it has competition:  Second, it’s hard because it clashes directly with the false part of us we want to blow up in front of others so that we will be recognized, fawned over, or even hit on.  That’s because the following fact should challenge all of us:

False humility is our way of rejecting our true self.

The pathway to PLAYING BIG is GETTING REAL – GETTING TO THE REAL SELF. This is where your truth is and where your future is.

I know – that sounds pretty deep, pretty daunting.  But it’s not as heady as it sounds.

What is the story you’ve attached to these three situations:

  1. The thing you are really lousy at that is causing trouble
  2. The person you are struggling with that’s doing what you want to do
  3. The situation that is preventing you from getting out of bed Monday morning
